May 4th - V

It is officially week 5. In reflection, this past week has been crazy for lack of a better term. The most glaring issue that came to mind was that in the midst of that craze, is it possible to maintain the systems that create your routine? I think the easy answer is that your habits will suffer amidst change and irregularity, and If I am being entirely honest that happened to me. But the question begs,  how do we prevent this? If your peace and space that is so sacred, gets interrupted, then how do the habits that are associated with that space not suffer as well? I think over a long period of time, it is impossible. In the short term however, there have to be ways to rebuff distractions so they are not detrimental to your habits. Like anything, it starts with the internal motivation to put what matters to you ahead of what is most comfortable. In the long run however, the best thing you can possibly do to protect your systems and habits, is create an environment that is encouraging for said habits.

Atomic Habits by James Clear, famously says that the key to forming lasting habits boils down to four conveniences: easy, attractive, satisfying, and obvious. If you are able to do this with your positive habits, you exponentially increase your likelihood of making those systems stick. Inevitably, your environment will not always cultivate the productive nature that Clear speaks of. So to circle back to my initial question, how do you maintain elite levels of productivity in the midst of distraction? The best way for me to answer this is as distraction increases, your own mental focus and acuity on what matters to you, must increase proportionally. Like anything in life, the level with which you meet challenges, has to exceed that of the challenge itself.

Sincerely,

An Aspiring Young Man
